The Department of Energy has announced that a new computer to be housed at Los Alamos — named RoadRunner after the state bird of New Mexico — is the first computer in the world to break the petaflop barrier, or perform 1015 floating operations per second.
Ok. What is a "flop" ?
A “flop” is an acronym meaning floating-point operations per second. One petaflop is 1,000 trillion operations per second. To put this into perspective, if each of the 6 billion people on earth had a hand calculator and worked together on a calculation 24 hours per day, 365 days a year, it would take 46 years to do what Roadrunner would do in one day. Well i feel you "à la ramasse"...
So i think this machine is built from a combination of IBM’s cell Processor, and AMD’s Opterons, which is essentially the same as Playstation 3s processors and what you get from an AMD server.
Toujours sous linux, les fiottes ?
